I once went out and bought three pieces of Ikea furniture to put together SOLELY because I was having a massive, days-long anxiety attack that was destroying me, and I knew that having something physical and orderly to do, with organized, external rules and steps to follow, might help. It did help, for the duration of the time it took to build the furniture. Everything else on this list gave me hives.

Watching 1899 with an 11-yr-old whose special interest just happens to be 19th-and-20th-century transatlantic liners:

Me: “I don’t know if you’ll like this; I haven’t seen it… let’s just put it on and see…”

About 30 seconds into episode one:

Kid, hitting pause: “OKAY, the ONLY ship that had four funnels in 1899 was the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse!” [implying that the show is already ludicrous]

A couple minutes later, when the main character opens a newspaper to a story about a missing ocean liner that looks a lot like the ship she’s on, he hits pause again:

“Okay, that is LITERALLY the Lusitania! Which hadn’t been built yet!”

And it goes on from there…

“Why are there rivets on the INSIDE of those steel plates?”

“Yeah, that’s definitely the Lusitania, except for that completely pointless handrail they added there; what’s that even for? Nobody could even get down there!!”

And his favorite:

“Why the %#*&&!!#! is there a huge rectangular hole in the side of the ship? What even IS this room?!? God forbid they encounter any WAVES in the middle of the Atlantic!”

Normally this kind of nit-picking would get annoying— 11-yr-old fact-checking ocean-liner-enthusiasts aren’t the target audience, after all— but the show is kinda slow, so his commentary (and outrage) is making me lol. I wish I’d written it all down.

Ok, I know I often have issues just getting up and starting a task that will only take me 5 minutes in the end. But WHY is that? What happens in my brain?

omg it works

It only took me 6 weeks of practicing in the mornings and on the weekends until I could solder the teeny tiny wires onto the spliced traces, without shorting to ground. Lots and lots of failures. LOTS of failures. But wow I learned a lot. And saved myself about $600. (Not that I would have paid it.) My next machine will not be an Apple. Screw their anti-repair design and proprietary screws &c.

If you want to see what this repair entailed, check out a true master at work: @iTouch-repair on YouTube does an amazing (truly amazing) job. (My repair did not look like his, lol.) I am astonished by the tidiness of his work; he makes it look easy! I didn’t have a microscope to work with, so that didn’t help, but I know even with the best scope in the world I could never achieve the skill of this man. His shop is in Ukraine; I really hope he is okay!

Very cute! Snakes can drink water in a more normal-looking way - but the cup setup is a little awkward, and anyway lots of snakes like to be a bit silly with it! I have several who like to drink water exclusively with their heads resting on the bottom of their water bowls!
